Strong Santa Ana Winds and High Fire Danger + Vandenberg Air Force Base Launching Monday

591Shares

A storm sliding well to the north and northeast of us will cool the Great Basin down. This, combined with strong northerly low level flow will bring very gusty winds into the Santa Ana Prone zones. Wind gust charts shows 50-70 mph wind gusts in the most prone zones.

Vandenberg Air Force Base is launching a Falcon-9 Rocket at 5:37am on Monday morning.  Vehicle will launch Iridium Next commercial communications satellites 21-30. This launch occurs well before sunrise and could be visible over a wide area due to the brilliant flame produced by the rocket’s first stage.

Some of you won’t see much while others will see some damage from them. The winds will be the strongest in the morning through noon hour, with waning gusts as evening comes on. Strong sinking air could allow these 30+ mph gusts to reach Azuza, Glendora, Irwindale and Bakersfield zones. Tehachapi is well within the strong gust zone on my model. North winds will also affect travel on I-15 through the CA/NV border, I-10, I-40, and I-8. Travel in the Channel Island regions is not recommended on Monday as per the wind gust model. Small crafts will not fair well.

Because of the drier air in place, warm temperatures, and gusty wind conditions, this is also a Fire Weather Warning … Fire risks are elevated …

While the Santa Ana Wind Warning zones will have 30+ mph winds, these zones in the fire weather warning will have 5-25 mph wind gusts that will work with temperatures near 90F and very dry conditions to make for a medium risk fire hazard, similar to the fire in Orange County and Corona not long ago.

Residents are urged to report any fires that start in the area as spread could become moderate.
