Southern California Weather Force has issued a Thunderstorm Watch effective tonight around 11 pm till before noon on Wednesday. The watch extends from San Diego County northward through the Inland Empire, Riverside/San Bernardino Mountains, into Lucerne/Johnson Valley, and ends up near the Fort Irwin Military Installation in a narrow corridor of the forecast area so read on for details … – Last day for the summer deal for alerts sent to your email for what areas you choose –
The earlier issued weather advisory (click here) was for a wide area. A weather advisory is for any showers OR thunderstorms and held off on thunder till tonight and Wednesday. So far we have had some showers out there today, but now I’ve upgraded the zones listed above into a Thunderstorm Watch, a step up. This thunderstorm watch is east of Los Angeles County. There is a fine line between that county and the Inland Empire. The border of this activity would be Mission Viejo, Corona, and Ontario, even the High Desert along I-15 in the Victor Valley. All areas west of there will not be upgraded, but because of showers, I’ve kept you in the advisory. You can see that in the image below or the corner left of the article image.
Because the mid-levels do up the moisture content, some of these will have some good rainfall with them. If you’re above 5,000 feet you will have more rainfall than someone at 2,000. Big Bear should see a good dose from this. The reason for that is because you are closer to the base of the clouds where the rain would be falling from so it doesn’t have as much longer to fall to your area. However, this still has the dynamics for dry lightning in some of the cells so this is a fire hazard due to lightning strikes.
Tops of the thunderstorms are expected to be just over 30,000 feet. With a base of 12,000 feet and a freezing level of 14,000 feet, that leaves 16,000 feet of frozen particles clashing into each other, charging the clouds – thus lightning – so confidence is high in the watch.
Additional storms are likely in the mountain and desert regions on Wednesday, especially the San Bernardino County Deserts – so as this watch expires, expect another one to be issued for the afternoon/evening event in the forecast area.
