Forecast: A powerful storm system is moving through the forecast area. The second front has already moved through the Los Angeles area and is continuing through the SD/IE areas as we speak. Snow-levels are high, at 8k right now and will lower tonight. There is a squall-line within the earlier posted Thunderstorm Watch across San Luis Obispo County (Click Here). This squall-line will be the strongest of the system in terms of low-level shear for strong winds along it as it moves through Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego County later on and up into the Inland Empire as well.
Due to the low-level flow and lack of thunderstorm dynamics, this will not be a Tornado Watch in the LA/OC areas, but I will say that within the Los Angeles Basin, the shear is strong enough for waterspouts and/or small tornadoes without the need for a thunderstorm to be present.
This watch will vacate by midnight tonight so expect the passage of this in the watch zones above to be this afternoon through that period.
A Squall-line Warning means that conditions are favorable for heavy rain and gusty winds, and if the wording supports it … funnel clouds / tornado …
